Don’t know if I’ve posted this before but I’m still going to post it anyways because no one reads my blog anyways and it’s a thought in my head.
I was a maintenance tech for cox communications out in Vegas. Which means I got called out in the middle of the night to fix outages. Sometimes it was to fix stuff for the bills gig or the mgm or any other major casino. But it also meant I’d be called out to fix out any outage in residential areas.
One night I got called out. Woke me up around 3am. I drove to the area and as soon as I started getting close I saw cop lights. Normally I have to spend allot of time tracking down the problem but as soon as I saw the cop lights flashing I knew exactly where the problem was.
I turned on all my flashers and strobes and pulled up. I was right. Some kid took the corner too fast and ran over the power supply that was powering the whole neighborhood. I was lucky… only took me 20 minutes to repower the neighborhood and get stuff back up and running. Thanks to the cop lights flashing.
The kid must have been somewhere between 16-17. His car was two wheels on the ground and two wheels on top of our power supply.
The cop asked me if we would want to charge him for the damages. I could have… would have been tens of thousands in damages. But I saw he was just a scared kid who just made a driving mistake. So I told the cop “I ain’t gonna make his night any more worse than it already is” I mean hell, his car is totaled and we didn’t really need that particular power supply.
As soon as I told that to the cop, he told the kid his car was being impounded… for obvious reasons. And it was that kids neighborhood .. he took off running home like he was running a marathon lol.
Every time I got called it was an automatic 3hr of overtime. That took me 20 minutes and I was able to keep a kid from getting unnecessarily penalized.
I was always irritated when I got woken out in the middle of the night. But that one made me laugh and happy I could keep him from paying a bunch of more money. Not sure a different maintenance tech would have done the same.
that’s all.
Keith.
