When I lived in Hawaii.

I was told not to say “howdy”. Because some people could confuse it with “howie” which is a word used for white ppl and it’s the equivalent of the N word. I never stopped though. I’m southern. I say howdy and I ain’t gonna let anyone tell me how to speak.
