Pretty sure I’m repeating myself. But this really bothers me still.
Last time I went to Southern Roots in McDonnoigh GA one of the employees lectured me. One of the customers the time before that complained because seeing me without an eye “disturbed” them. I’ve encountered this before. People only accept disabilities if it ain’t ugly. But because mine is “ugly” and “disturbing” everyone expects me to hide it.
That reminded me of a bar I went to once in Las Vegas a long time ago. My eyepatch was rubbing the top of my ears raw… they ain’t exactly comfortable so I took it off. The bartender said he’d refuse to serve me if I didn’t put it back on, and I quote “no one wants to see that fucking ugly ass shit”.
The way I was treated at Southern Roots reminded me of that, just without the profanity.
Why do places keep insisting that I keep my disability hidden?
